Why do I need an MOT?

MOTs are required on cars which are over 3 years old by law in the UK. MOT inspections and certificates are required to ensure that the vehicle you are driving meets current road safety and environmental standards.

It is against the law to drive a car over 3 years old on a public road without a valid MOT certificate.

If you are found to be driving in a car which requires you to have a valid MOT certificate, you can face:

  • Fines ranging from £1,000 - £2,500
  • 3 penalty points on your licence
  • In extreme circumstances, a driving ban

Please note: there are some exemptions in place for vintage and classic cars.

Failed MOT

If your car fails the MOT inspection, and you want to use your car on public roads, you are required to have any necessary repairs carried out and the vehicle retested.

Driving without a valid MOT can also affect your car insurance coverage, potentially causing it to become invalid.
