Should I take my car for MOT early?

There are advantages to booking in your MOT Test before the expiration date on the current MOT.

Although there is a limit on how early you can book in a new test if you want to keep the same expiration date for the next year.

For this, the new MOT Test must be up to a month (minus a day) before it is set to run out.

For example, if your MOT is set to expire on 11th March, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for next year is 12th February.

Early MOT Test

By booking in the MOT Test earlier than the expiration date on the current certificate, you are giving yourself some room in which to have repairs carried out should the car fail.

Even if the new test is recorded as a fail, you will still be able to drive the vehicle - as long as none of the failure reasons are marked as ‘dangerous’ - until the current MOT certification expires.

This gives you some time to shop around and find the best solution for any repair work that is required.
