Is MOT compulsory?

Yes, an MOT is legally required for most vehicles in the UK once they are more than three years old. The MOT test ensures that your vehicle meets the minimum safety and environmental standards to be used on public roads.

Driving without a valid MOT certificate is illegal and can result in fines of up to £1,000, penalty points, and potentially invalidated insurance – even if the vehicle seems roadworthy.

However, there are a few exemptions to the MOT requirement:

  • New vehicles: Cars and motorcycles under three years old don’t need an MOT.
  • Classic/historic vehicles: If your vehicle is over 40 years old and hasn’t been substantially modified in the past 30 years
  • Off-road vehicles: Vehicles registered as SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) don’t need an MOT while off the road, but must have one before returning to public use.
  • Certain specialist vehicles: Some agricultural, electric goods, or limited-use vehicles may also qualify for exemption, depending on their classification.

Even if your vehicle is exempt, it must still be kept in a roadworthy condition. If it’s found to be unsafe or defective, you could still face penalties.

So while some vehicles are exempt, for the vast majority of drivers, an annual MOT is compulsory – and essential for keeping your car or motorcycle safe and legal on the road.
