Where can I get an MOT?

In the UK, MOT Tests can only be carried out by MOT Test centres that have been approved by the DVSA, on behalf of the Secretary of State.

This is different in Northern Ireland – where only government-run test centres can carry out an MOT Test.

Identifying MOT Garages

In England, Scotland and Wales you can identify a garage that has been approved to carry out MOT Tests by the blue sign with 3 white triangles. Only approved centres are eligible to display this sign.

MOT Garages at Blackcircles.com

If you are looking for a garage on the Blackcircles.com network that is approved for MOT tests, look for the MOT icon in the garage search results. This will be listed alongside any garage that has the authority to carry out MOT Testing.

MOT Garage Requirements

To pass the required authorisation to carry out MOT tests, the garage must adhere to several key criteria.

Garage Premises

  • Test facilities housed in a weatherproof building capable of being totally enclosed and providing a satisfactory working area.
  • Equipment laid out so that testing can be performed effectively.
  • Unobstructed, safe and easy access via a road from the site entrance.
  • Adequate off-road parking.
  • A clearly defined weatherproof viewing area from which all stages of the MOT test in progress can be observed.
  • Safe access from the customer reception to the designated viewing area.

If monitors are used:

  • The monitor must be identified as the MOT viewing facility/area.
  • The monitor must be available to view the test when requested.
  • The relayed images cannot be interrupted or used for other purposes.

MOT Test Bay

  • Clear unobstructed access.
  • Vehicle entrances and exits that conform to the dimensions of the vehicle being inspected.
  • Adequate general lighting.

Garage Layout

  • Conform to the requirements of the vehicle being tested.
  • Have at least 600mm clearance between the outer edges of equipment in other bays.
  • Have at least 600mm clearance around all parts of a lift.
  • Have a clearance of at least 1.0m forwards of the non drive-on end and 1.5m to the rear of the drive-on end.
