Are MOTs recorded online?

Yes – all MOT tests in the UK are recorded digitally by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

After your vehicle is tested, the result (pass or fail) is uploaded to a central database. This allows you to:

  • Check your current MOT status
  • View past results and advisories
  • Track mileage history
  • Set reminders for future tests

While you may receive a paper certificate, the official record is always stored online.

Where can you find your MOT history?

You can view your full MOT history using the GOV.UK MOT history checker.

All you need is your vehicle registration number to access:

  • Previous test dates
  • Pass or fail results
  • Mileage readings
  • Advisory notes and defects

This is particularly useful when buying a used car, as it provides insight into how well the vehicle has been maintained.

You can also check MOT status alongside tax details using the DVLA vehicle enquiry tool.

What does an MOT certificate show?

An MOT certificate confirms the result of your vehicle’s test and includes:

  • Vehicle details
  • Test date and location
  • Test result
  • Any advisories or defects

Possible MOT results

  • Pass (no advisories) – The vehicle meets all legal standards
  • Pass with advisories – Minor issues that may need attention
  • Pass with minor defects – Issues that should be repaired soon
  • Fail (major defects) – Safety issues that must be fixed
  • Fail (dangerous defects) – Immediate safety risks requiring urgent repair

Although records are stored digitally, you will usually still receive a paper copy for your records.

Why is my MOT not showing online?

If you can’t find your MOT record online, there are a few common reasons:

1. The test was very recent

It can take a short time for results to appear after a test. Records are only visible once the test centre uploads them to the DVSA database.

2. Incorrect details

A typo in your registration number or vehicle details can prevent results from showing. Double-check your entry.

3. MOT exemption

Some vehicles won’t have MOT records, including:

  • Cars under three years old
  • Certain classic or historic vehicles

If your vehicle is exempt, no MOT data will appear until it becomes eligible for testing.

Stay on top of your MOT

Checking your MOT status regularly helps you:

  • Avoid fines for an expired MOT
  • Plan your next test in advance
  • Track your vehicle’s condition over time

With online tools available, it only takes a few seconds to stay compliant and keep your car roadworthy.
