When can I get an MOT done?
You can get an
MOT done up to one month (minus a day) before your current MOT certificate expires, while still keeping the same renewal date for the following year.
For example, if your MOT expires on 20th August, you can book the test from 21st July onwards without affecting your expiry date.
This gives you a bit of flexibility to fit the test around your schedule, without losing any time on your current certificate.
If you book the MOT earlier than that one-month window, the new certificate will run from the date of the test, which could shorten your renewal cycle.
Many garages allow you to book MOTs well in advance, and it’s a good idea to secure your slot early – especially during busy periods like spring and late summer when test centres tend to fill up.
You can also set up free reminders online to make sure you never miss your MOT deadline.
