Should I get an MOT before selling my car?

There is no legal requirement for you to get an MOT Test completed on your car before you attempt to sell it.

However, if the MOT is set to expire soon, you are likely to find that buyers will be more interested in the car if it has a valid MOT certificate.

A recent and valid MOT Test pass on a vehicle will make the vehicle a more promising proposition to potential buyers.

Selling a car without an MOT

If your car no longer has a valid MOT certificate, you can still sell it, but you must tell the buyer there is no MOT.

Even though potential buyers can look up the MOT status and history of a vehicle, failing to disclose to any potential buyers that the car no longer has an MOT is illegal.

Therefore, it is important that you are upfront and transparent if this is the case.
