A brand-new car doesn’t need an
MOT straight away – its first MOT is due three years after the date it was first registered.
Until then, it’s exempt from MOT testing, as it’s expected to meet the required safety and environmental standards during its early years on the road.
After that three-year point, your car will need an MOT every 12 months to stay legally roadworthy.
You can check your car’s registration document (V5C) to confirm the date of first registration and work out when your first MOT is due.
If you’d rather not rely on memory, it’s a good idea to set yourself a reminder or use the
GOV.UK MOT checker to track the due date and get a free email alert closer to the time.
Booking your
car’s first MOT a few weeks in advance can help avoid any last-minute stress and give you time to address any issues if needed.
