Do electric cars need an MOT?

Yes, electric cars are required to go through an MOT Test. Much like cars with an internal combustion engine (ICE), EVs are required to have their first MOT Test 3 years after they have been registered and then on an annual basis thereafter.

There are a few differences between an EV MOT and a traditional one. As an EV does not have an ICE or exhaust system, these components aren’t required.

However, they do require checks to their high-voltage electric cabling and electric motor.

Apart from this, most other standard checks are also carried out on an electric car. Including, but not limited to:

  • Bodywork
  • Brakes
  • Lights
  • Suspension
  • Tyres & Wheels
