Sign upNo, it's not advisable to use normal car tyres on a campervan. Campervans require tyres that can support heavier loads and provide better handling and stability, which regular car tyres may not offer.
Campervan tyres can last between five to seven years, depending on factors like usage, maintenance, and storage conditions. Regularly inspecting them for signs of wear and tear can help determine if they need replacing sooner.
Please note that the tyres can wear down faster if used regularly. Make sure you change your tyres once they begin to approach 1.6mm in tread depth – or if you spot any issues with the overall health of the tyre (such as bulges, cuts, or sidewall damage).
If you do not use your campervan often, it's generally recommended to replace campervan tyres every five to seven years. Even if they appear to be in good condition. Tyres can deteriorate over time due to exposure to the elements, even if they're not heavily used.
You can check the age of your campervan tyres by looking at the DOT code on a tyre’s sidewall. The last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture. For example, "2319" means the tyre was made in the 23rd week of 2019.
The recommended tyre pressure for your campervan can usually be found in the owner’s handbook - or on a sticker inside the driver’s door. It’s important to maintain the correct pressure to ensure safe handling and to prevent tyre damage.
Pay attention to the different pressure recommendations for laden and unladen vehicles. As your amount and weight of cargo can affect the amount of pressure required.
In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for campervan tyres is 1.6 millimetres across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Regularly checking the tread depth is important for safety and legal compliance.
