Does regenerative braking require special attention during servicing?

Yes - regenerative braking is one of the unique features of hybrid and electric vehicles, and it affects how traditional brakes are used and maintained.

What is regenerative braking?

Regenerative braking helps slow the car down by using the electric motor to recover energy. It reduces wear on the brake pads — which is a benefit — but also means that the mechanical brakes are used less frequently.

Because of this, components such as brake pads, discs, and calipers can sometimes seize or corrode from lack of use. That’s why regular servicing is so important.

What’s checked during a service?

  • Inspection for signs of sticking or rust on brake components
  • Lubrication of calipers and sliders
  • Brake fluid condition and scheduled replacement (typically every 2 years)
  • Testing for braking efficiency and software calibration, if required

Even if your brakes aren’t visibly worn, a hybrid-trained technician may clean and maintain the braking system as a preventative measure. This is especially important on cars that rely heavily on regenerative systems and use their physical brakes less often.

By ensuring both the regenerative and traditional brake systems are working properly, you get consistent performance and avoid costly repairs down the line.
