Can normal mechanics work on hybrids?

In some cases, yes. However, it depends on the garage, the tools available, and the expertise of the mechanic.

Hybrid cars share many components with conventional vehicles — including the engine oil, filters, tyres, and brakes. These routine maintenance tasks can be carried out by most qualified mechanics without issue.

Where things change is with the electrical system. Hybrid vehicles include high-voltage batteries and complex electronic systems that require specific training and handling procedures to work on safely.

Not all mechanics are qualified in this area. Servicing or repairing these systems without proper training and equipment can be dangerous — both for the technician and the vehicle.

That’s why many garages advertise themselves as “hybrid-ready” or list hybrid servicing as a specialist offering. These businesses typically employ technicians who are trained to work on hybrid systems and use tools designed for high-voltage safety.

If in doubt, look for manufacturer-approved workshops or independent garages with hybrid certification.
