2025 BMW M4 Competition refresh: What’s Vicki’s verdict?

Michelin tyres

While its styling is divisive, there’s no denying the M4’s ferocious performance. But can the facelift model take things up another gear? It’s road test time.

Believe it or not, BMW’s venerable G series sports coupe has been splitting opinion for over four years now. That means it’s high time the M4 got a little mid-lifecycle love to keep it on top of rivals from Mercedes and Audi.

Helping to find out if the facelift is worth the upgrade, DriverReviews host, Vicki Butler-Henderson, has the enviable task of putting the M car through its paces on British roads. And, despite the hysteria surrounding its bulging Kidney Grilles, she’s a fan of the latest look. In particular, Vicki admires the sleek new headlight design and intricate multi-spoke alloys. Even the controversial intakes — which actually remain unchanged for the refresh — get her seal of approval.

As with every fast BMW, though, the M4’s success rides on its ability to turn corners, not heads. Thankfully, it’s business as usual on this front. Despite tipping the scales at a hefty 1850 kg, the M4 turns with tenacity and even has an air of hot hatch about its DNA — aided, no doubt, by the inclusion of high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres. Sure, the ride isn’t the supplest because of the firm damping — even with the adaptive shock absorbers in their softest setting — but it’s far from what you’d call “crashy”.

And the engine? Well, Vicki argues that the uprated 3.0-litre turbo six feels every bit as powerful as its 523 bhp and 480 lb-ft output suggests — as do the optional carbon ceramic brakes. However, potent though it is, she’s less impressed by its muted soundtrack which ‘sounds like the exhaust was wrapped in a duvet, even with the window down.’

But what’s it like to live with? And how much will these upgrades — many of which are optional extras — set you back? Hit the video to find out.
