Is Ford’s Mustang Mach-E GT worthy of the iconic pony car title?

Pinning a muscle car badge on an all-electric SUV was always going to be controversial; Vicki Butler-Henderson finds out if we should be aggrieved or enthusiastic. Can the Mach-E blend electric practicality with Mustang thrills?

Wherever you stand on the EV Mustang debate, Vicki argues that if you don’t like it, Ford still makes the good ol’ V8 model to quench your traditional muscle car thirst.

However, for those open to change, there’s plenty to enjoy about the new Mach-E GT. Starting with the styling, Vicki’s immediately impressed by the intricate 20-inch wheels wrapped in standard Pirelli P Zero rubber. Similarly, Mustang hallmarks like the three-bar taillights and long bonnet, go down well with the DriverReview’s ambassador.

Inside, it’s more revolutionary than evolutionary. As with many EVs, a large 15.5-inch central touchscreen dominates — controlling everything from the climate control to an impressive suite of driver assistance technology. While a mix of premium leather and suede make the interior feel as though “it’s wearing a business suit.”

It’s behind the wheel where buyers will notice the biggest changes compared to the rear-wheel drive petrol ‘Stang. In flagship GT spec, the Mach-E delivers a Porsche GT3-rivalling 490 bhp to all four wheels with little drama. Though, at a whopping 2,400 kg, each of those ponies have got their work cut out. Despite this, 0-60 mph is ticked off in an impressive 4.4 seconds.

As for the driving feel, Vicki notes the transformative effect the Mach-E’s different driving modes have on the SUV’s response and handling. In particular, the Mustang takes on a whole new character with the Untamed Plus mode selected, with throttle response, steering feedback, and performance, all heightened.

Although, when it comes to the synthesised engine note — as found on performance EVs like Hyundai’s Ioniq 5N — there’s room for improvement. According to the DriverReview’s host, a deeper, V8-esque burble would be more in keeping with the Mach-E’s lineage.

But what about the latest Blue Cruise technology, MagneRide suspension, and door mounted keypad? Hit the video for a full synopsis of Ford’s latest electric Mustang.
