New Citroen My Ami Buggy sells out in the UK

Citroen My Ami Buggy

With just 40 units up for grabs in the UK, the first Ami Buggy was snapped up in under three minutes. But what’s all the fuss about?

If Bear Grylls was in the market for a Citroen Ami (while admittedly not that likely) this is probably the version he would buy. The My Ami Buggy is the rugged, outdoorsy sibling of Citroen’s eccentric electric quadricycle.

To toughen up the Ami’s styling Citroen has added black plastic reinforced bumpers, skid plates, headlamp surrounds and nifty wheel arch extensions. Helping to tie the look together is a military-esque shade of Khaki paint and bars in the place of doors.

Don’t be fooled by the styling though: this Buggy is no rock crawler. With identical underpinnings to the regular Ami, there’s no real off-road potential on offer. This is especially true given Citroen’s decision to ditch the knobbly off-road tyres fitted to the concept in favour of conventional skinny road tyres.

As with the original model, performance is largely dependent on how much you had for lunch and the direction of any prevailing breeze — 28 mph flat-out is the best you’ll see. But, for this kind of vehicle, that’s all part of the fun. Plus, a full charge can be achieved in less than four hours and will get you 46 miles; perfect for a quick trip down to the beach on a sunny afternoon.

Given the Buggy’s highly limited scope of applications and increased likelihood of being splashed driving through a watery pothole, you’d be forgiven for assuming it might not exactly fly off the shelves at £10,495. Surprisingly though, it appears to have struck a chord with the British public, as all 40 special editions sold out almost immediately.

Who knows how Citroen will reinvent their quirky quadricycle next: a sports version, or an MPV for seven exceedingly tiny people perhaps? Only time will tell.
