What does "Not For Highway Use" mean?

When a motorcycle tyre is marked with "Not for Highway Use", it means that the tyre is not legal or safe to be used on public roads.

This designation is typically applied to tyres that are designed for specialist applications where standard road safety regulations do not apply.

These tyres are often used for:

  • Off-road riding – such as motocross, enduro, or trail riding, where the tyre tread and construction are optimised for loose surfaces rather than tarmac.
  • Track use – racing or closed-circuit events where maximum grip and performance are prioritised over durability and compliance with road standards.
  • Show or display purposes – for example, classic motorcycles on display at events where the tyres are not intended for active road use.

Why are these tyres unsuitable for the road?

"Not for Highway Use" tyres usually do not meet the legal requirements for road-approved tyres, such as compliance with Department for Transport (DfT) or ECE regulations.

They may lack features like adequate tread depth for wet grip, correct speed ratings, or the necessary markings to indicate roadworthiness.

Using these tyres on public roads can result in reduced safety, poor handling on tarmac, increased wear, and potential legal consequences if stopped by authorities or involved in an accident.

If you require a tyre for mixed on-road and off-road use, look for a road-legal dual-sport or adventure tyre that meets all necessary safety standards.
