Can motorcycle tyres be plugged?

Yes, motorcycle tyres can be plugged in certain situations – but this is generally considered a temporary repair and should only be done if the damage meets specific safety criteria.

Plugging is typically used to seal small punctures, such as those caused by a nail or screw, in the tread area of a tubeless tyre.

However, there are important limitations:

  • The puncture must be small (usually no more than 6 mm in diameter).
  • The damage must be located in the central tread area — never in the sidewall or shoulder of the tyre.
  • The tyre should not have suffered internal damage or significant air loss while riding.
  • The repair should comply with British Standard BS AU 159 or equivalent safety guidelines.

Is plugging a permanent fix?

No, while some repair methods use a combination plug-and-patch system that can last the remaining life of the tyre if done professionally, most roadside or DIY plug repairs are intended to get you home or to a repair facility.
For safety, many riders choose to replace the tyre after a puncture, particularly on high-performance or high-speed motorcycles.

Can you ride at high speeds on a plugged tyre?

It’s not recommended, – even if professionally repaired, a plugged tyre may have reduced structural integrity.
Riding at high speeds or carrying heavy loads can increase the risk of failure. Always follow the repairer’s advice and consider replacing the tyre for full peace of mind.
