Motorcycle tyre lifespan can vary significantly depending on riding style, road conditions, tyre type, and maintenance.
On average, sport tyres may last around 3,000–5,000 miles, while touring or commuting tyres can last up to 10,000–15,000 miles.
However, age is just as important as tread wear. Even if a tyre appears in good condition, manufacturers recommend that tyres be professionally inspected every year after five years of use, and replaced after ten years, regardless of mileage.
Regular inspections are essential; look out for reduced tread depth (UK legal minimum is 1mm across three-quarters of the width for bikes over 50cc), visible damage, cracking, flat spots, or signs of ageing like deformation or rubber hardening.
Punctures should only be repaired if they fall within the safe central tread area and have not compromised the tyre’s structure.
Riding on tyres past their safe limit can reduce grip, increase stopping distance, and pose a serious safety risk – especially in wet conditions.
