What happens if my car fails its MOT multiple times?

If your car doesn't pass its MOT test several times, you'll need to fix the problems and pass a retest each time.

Get the issues repaired

You can get your car repaired at the same garage that conducted the MOT, or you can choose a different one.

Book a retest

Once you have had any necessary work done to fix the repair, you will be required to book another MOT test.

If you are taking the car in for a partial retest – certain items like tyres, wheels, mirrors, doors, and wipers might be checked for free.

Should you wait more than 10 days until having the car retested, you will likely need to pay for a full price test.

Keep trying if necessary

If your car doesn't pass the retest, you'll need to address the issues again. Taking the test a third time.

If this happens, it may be a good idea to speak to the garage manager for advice on next steps.

Look into other solutions

If your car fails its MOT multiple times, it might be worth having a mechanic diagnose any underlying issues.

It’s illegal to drive a car that hasn’t passed its MOT because it may not be safe.

If you’re caught driving without a valid MOT, you could face a fine of up to £1,000. If your car is classified as “dangerous,” the penalty could be as high as £2,500, along with a driving ban and three penalty points on your licence.
