Where can I get repairs done after an MOT fail?

Should your car fail its MOT, you are free to have any required repairs carried out at a garage of your choice. You do not need to have them completed at the MOT centre that carried out the test. Although that is also an option.

Repairs At the MOT Test Centre

You are free to book your car to the test centre – for them to carry out the required repairs. In most cases this means it will also be retested for free – as long as it takes place within 10 working days.

MOT Repairs At a Different Garage

You are free to have your car repaired at a different garage.

Then you can return to the original test centre for a partial retest.

You may be required to pay a partial fee in this instance, which should be less than the full MOT fee.

If you get a full retest at a different MOT centre, you will need to pay the full MOT fee that they charge.

Can I drive my car for repairs after an MOT fail?

Yes, if the current MOT certificate is still valid and the MOT test didn't report a dangerous defect, you are able to drive the car to a different location.
