Track-only MCXtrema is Maserati’s most powerful car ever

Maserati has taken the wraps off its most powerful car ever at Monterey Car Week, California, with the unveiling of the MCXtrema.

This 730bhp limited-edition is purely for track use, even if it is based on the slinky MC20 road car. Only 62 MCXtremas will be built and they have all been spoken for already.

It’s easy to see why this race-spec car from Maserati has sold out when it comes with an uprated version of the MC20’s 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine. Unlike the road car’s eight-speed transmission, the MCXtrema has a racing six-speed sequential manual gearbox.

The MCXtrema also comes with plenty of bespoke carbon fibre parts for the body, seats, and steering wheel to help reduce the track car’s weight by a massive 250kg over the roadgoing model. As the ultimate Maserati for track day fans, the MCXtrema’s cabin has been stripped of the usual luxuries. In their place are a racing harness and pedals, lap counter, and a camera to record every moment at the wheel.

A passenger seat is an option, while racing air jacks are fitted to the MCXtrema for quick changes of the 18-inch alloy wheels and tyres. Nestling behind the wheels are Brembo carbon-ceramic racing brakes and adjustable suspension.

Finishing off the MCXtrema’s radical race spec are the aggressive front splitter and rear wing, which has a large central fin to keep the Maserati stable at high speeds on the track.

And the price for Maserati’s most powerful car ever? Well, the Italian firm isn’t saying and nor are the 62 very lucky owners.
