Famed for adding an extra dose of extravagance to the world’s most exclusive supercars, Mansory’s latest project takes the MC20 to another dimension.
Since 1989 Mansory has been the go-to firm if you felt your slice of exotica wasn’t turning enough heads. With their bulging bodywork, lurid paint schemes, and boosted powerplants, the firm's creations are the peacocks of the automotive world.
But, like most acquired tastes, these modified machines tend to prove pretty polarising. For some, nothing else compares. For others, it’s the motoring equivalent of painting a transformers battle scene into the foreground of the Mona Lisa.
However, while hardly subtle, the new MCX Pergusa’s styling is a far cry from some of the firm’s most outlandish offerings. Sure, Mansory’s mods mean you’ll spot the Pergusa coming from a mile off, but it’s all functional – and you don’t have to opt for such a bold, tangerine-esque interior, if you don’t want to.
As for the aerodynamic gains achieved by the slew of wings and louvres, no exact figures have been quoted. Though, Mansory has confirmed that the “carbon double diffuser with a central brake light increases the downforce on the rear axle”, while the new side inlets and bonnet feed the biturbo V6 with cool, fresh air.
That’s a good thing, given the engine will be sucking in more O2 than ever before. With styling ticked off, the tuning firm turned its attention to maximizing the Maserati’s BHP. New electronics and a more free-flowing exhaust have elicited gains of 120 bhp at the crankshaft, for a total of 750 bhp. Combined with extremely grippy and versatile Continental SportContact 7 tyres, the more explosive powertrain produces a 2.6 second 0-60 mph sprint and top speed in excess of 200 mph.
Those high-performance tyres also wrap new one-piece, ultra-lightweight forged wheels. As well as contributing to the Pergusa’s menacing aesthetic, the new center-lock rims will help to reduce unsprung mass — lightening the load on both the engine and the brakes.
Just five Mansory MCX Pergusas will make production, so you won’t need to worry about your next-door neighbour playing copycat. Price, on the other hand, is still undisclosed. Although, if you can afford one, Mansory’s optional carbon money clip — we’re not joking — will probably come in handy for securing your weighty wads of cash.
Most petrolheads are familiar with the term “sleeper”: a performance car which likes to hide its sporting pretentions. But we think Mansory’s latest creation is more of a shouter, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
