Uniroyal has earned its reputation as the wet weather driving expert, but what allowed the RainSport 5 to set the current benchmark? We asked Uniroyal’s tyre specialist to find out.
What is it about the Rainsport 5 which allows it to truly ‘master the wet’? We sat down with Uniroyal Tyre’s Product Manager Scott Benbow to get the experts inside scoop.
A: Uniroyal brand was founded in the late 1950s under the joint name of Uniroyal-Englebert, and within a decade was renamed to just Uniroyal, as we know it today.
We were the first to produce a ‘rain tyre’, the first to recognise the water-deflecting properties of the directional V-shaped tread, and the first to use biomimicry in the development of our Shark Skin Technology.
Our tyre range caters for every individual need. So no matter what type of car you drive, where you drive or how you drive, we’ll have a tyre to suit you.
And our tyres don’t just perform well either. Thanks to their exquisite design, they look good doing it too. Every single groove has a purpose, every feature has been meticulously measured, and every compound has been perfected.
A: The predecessor to the RainSport 5, the RainSport 3, was already a fantastic tyre with outstanding wet weather performance. However, using our expertise and technological developments we wanted to push towards producing the next level of performance.
Through this, we managed to maintain our ‘best in wet’ performance, but also increase our performance in other key areas such as mileage and handling in our latest generation of tyre.

A: The RainSport 5 features our unique Shark Skin Technology. To prevent aquaplaning, we looked to bionics and we’ve been able to replicate the effect of shark’s skin within the tyre’s tread pattern. The result: water turbulence is reduced, allowing it to be expelled quickly from beneath the tyre.
In simple terms, the RainSport 5 can run across wet roads without losing contact. As the water passes through the wide in-block-grooves at speed, it is quickly dispersed, allowing the tyre to maintain its hold on the road surface and reducing the risk of aquaplaning.
In addition, the innovative Aqua-Twist Sipes channel the water out of the tyre, leading to increased grip on wet and slippery roads.
A: It’s probably not a surprise if I say that the RainSport 5 is put through extremely demanding aquaplaning tests at high speed — as that’s exactly where it’s expected to prove its strength. What may be less expected is that we run the same tests with used tyres too. This way we can be sure the tyre still delivers safety and solid performance even after significant wear.
A: Uniroyal is known as the ‘rain tyre’, so again, it’s not surprising that wet performance is one of our top priorities. At the same time, we recognise that other factors are equally important in delivering the highest level of driving experience. That’s why, in developing the RainSport 5 and RainExpert 5, it was essential for us to achieve outstanding wet performance without compromising on other key attributes.
A: For me, it has to be a deep sense of confidence and control. As the rain falls and the road surface becomes increasingly wet, the RainSport 5 grips with reassuring tenacity, cutting through standing water with that strong protection against aquaplaning. Braking performance also feels responsive, cornering remains precise, and acceleration is smooth. Overall, this translates every input into safe, predictable motions.
A: Looking ahead, one of the biggest challenges comes from stricter EU regulations on environmental impact and tyre abrasion. Sustainability has become a fundamental part of tyre development, and the rapid growth of electric vehicles brings its own demands too — higher loads, lower noise, reduced rolling resistance, things like that.
For us at Uniroyal, this is also a major opportunity. With advanced tread designs and enhanced compounds, we’re making sure our tyres are ready for the future.
A: Assured, responsive, and safe!
So, it’s clear that the Uniroyal RainSport 5’s reputation as a master of the wet is earned through meticulous engineering, a commitment to cutting-edge technology, and rigorous testing.
Providing an ‘assured, responsive, and safe’ experience, the RainSport 5 delivers the crucial element drivers seek in poor weather: unwavering confidence and control. Would you opt for the RainSport 5 as your next tyre?
