VW Tiguan and T-Cross turn to the dark side with stealthy new Black Editions

VW Tiguan Black Edition

Whether it’s done on the factory floor or in your home garage, the trend of de-chroming cars shows no signs of abating. And, with over eight Black Editions on its books, few love the covert craze more than VW. Are its latest offerings worth the upgrade? Find out below.

What do Polo, Taigo, T-Roc, T-Roc R, Golf and Golf R have in common? That’s right, they’re all available in VW’s desirable Black Edition spec. Ditching the glitz of polished metals from every angle, these upgrade packages give a welcome dose of menace to any body style. Now though, VW has added two more names to that list: Tiguan and T-Cross.

Starting with the smaller machine, the T-Cross Black Edition is positioned above the already generously equipped R-Line model. That means that as well as a stealthy cosmetic package, you get tasty extras including 18-inch York alloy wheels, LED taillights with dynamic turn signals, and even powerful IQ.LIGHT matrix headlamps which can cast their beam an impressive 500 metres. But don’t expect the aggressive styling accents to be paired to an angrier powerplant or tuned suspension; the blacked-out T-Cross is available with the same choice of 1.5 TSI 115 and 150 PS engines as the regular model.

As VW’s strongest seller worldwide, the Tiguan Black Edition can’t afford to flop either. Luckily, this dusky variant benefits from all the same enhancements as the T-Cross — including a larger 20-inch version of those black York alloys — plus a nifty driver assistance package which benefits from Lane Assist and a 360-degree reversing camera. Those looking for something a bit peppier will also be happy to hear that VW’s black pack can be optioned on the fastest Tiguan ( the Golf GTI-engined 265 PS 4MOTION) as well as on the more restrained 204 PS model.

Fancy making the switch? Order books for VW’s latest Black Edition SUVs open on December 12th, 2024, with prices kicking off at £29,985 and £46,605 respectively. But, given both of those figures represent a substantial increase (nearly £6,000 in the Tiguan’s case) over the next highest R-Line spec, we can’t help but wonder if your money might be better spent elsewhere on the options list.

Are black packs still en vogue, or is it time chrome made a comeback? Let us know your thoughts on this popular styling trend.
