Will my car pass MOT with a warning light on?

In most cases, no – your car will not pass its MOT if a dashboard warning light is illuminated, especially if it relates to a system that affects safety or emissions.
During the test, the MOT inspector will check for warning lights linked to systems such as:

  • Airbags
  • ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
  • ESC (Electronic Stability Control)
  • Brake fluid or electronic parking brake
  • Engine management or emissions

If any of these lights stay on when the engine is running, it can lead to an MOT failure. That’s because a lit warning light may indicate a fault that could compromise your vehicle’s safety or performance.
Even if the car seems to drive normally, it’s best to get any warning lights diagnosed and repaired before your test. In some cases, a simple sensor reset or software update might resolve the issue – but ignoring it could mean a failed MOT and the inconvenience of a retest.
