Which parts are checked in an MOT?

During an MOT test, various parts of your vehicle are inspected to ensure they meet legal safety and environmental standards.

While the test doesn’t cover your engine, clutch, or gearbox, it does focus on key systems that affect roadworthiness.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s included:

Category What’s Checked
Body & Structure Excessive corrosion, structural damage, sharp edges that could cause injury
Towbars Security, condition, signs of damage, proper function of the 13-pin electrical socket
Fuel System Leaks, condition of pipes and hoses, secure fuel cap (key required for inspection)
Exhaust & Emissions Secure fitting, leaks, excessive noise, emissions in line with legal limits
Seatbelts Presence, condition, operation, secure fittings, dashboard warning lights
Seats Secure fittings, adjustability of driver’s seat, upright position of seat backs
Doors Secure latches, proper operation of front and rear doors, hinge condition
Mirrors Correct number, secure fitment, good condition
Load Security Boot or tailgate must close securely
Brakes Condition, effectiveness, wear, ABS/ESC systems and warning lights
Tyres & Wheels Tread depth, condition, correct size/type, security, TPMS warning light (if fitted)
Registration Plates Clean, securely fixed, correct spacing and font
Lights Operation of all lights, including LED/HID, headlamp aim and beam function
Bonnet Must close and latch securely
Wipers & Washers Must work properly and clear the windscreen effectively
Windscreen Damage, chips or cracks affecting driver’s view
Horn Works properly and is suitable for the vehicle
Steering & Suspension Wear, damage, correct operation, leaks, steering lock function, dashboard warnings
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Must be clearly displayed (for vehicles registered after 1 August 1980)
Electrical Components Visible wiring condition, battery security and leaks

Preparing your car ahead of time – even just a quick visual check – can help catch common faults before the test and improve your chances of a pass.
