How strict is an MOT test?

Given the nature of the MOT Test and the purpose behind it – to ensure vehicles being used on the road are safe and meet legal standards – the MOT inspection is thorough but fair.

All the major parts of the vehicle will be checked – as well as registration details and the identification of the vehicle.

If you would like to watch the inspection take place, you can do this from a viewing area. However, you are not allowed to interrupt or intervene when the inspection is taking place.

Parts Checked in MOT Test

During the test, the following parts of the car will be checked by the test inspector:

Lighting equipment
Steering (including suspension)
Brakes
Car Tyres
Seat belts
Exhaust system & emissions
The fuel system
Driver's view of the road
Windscreen & wipers
Horn
Mirrors
Registration plates and Vehicle Identification Number

Note: the test does not cover the state of the engine, the gearbox, or the clutch.
