Can I drive my car to the MOT test if it has no MOT?
Yes, you can legally drive your car to a pre-booked MOT test even if it does not currently have a valid MOT certificate, but there are strict conditions:
- Direct to the MOT centre only – You must be driving directly to or from a pre-arranged MOT appointment. Detours or using the car for other journeys is not permitted.
- Proof of booking – You should carry confirmation of your MOT appointment (for example, an email or booking reference) in case you are stopped by the police.
- Insurance requirements – Your insurance must still be valid. While not having an MOT does not automatically invalidate insurance, if the vehicle is deemed unroadworthy you could face penalties.
- After an MOT failure – If your car fails the MOT, you may only drive it away if it meets the minimum road safety standards and you are travelling directly to a repair centre.
Driving without a valid MOT in any other circumstances is illegal and can result in a fine of up to £1,000, penalty points on your licence, and potential invalidation of your insurance.
