Michelin Primacy 5 vs Pilot Sport 4

Michelin Primacy 5 vs Pilot Sport 4

Michelin have garnered a world class reputation for their manufacturing of premium tyres.

As of 2025, Michelin are recognised as the leading tyre brand globally. This is in part due to their innovative model line-up that they have expanded on over the years, ranging from car tyres to motorbike tyres, as well as commercial/van tyres to name a few.

Two of their most popular tyre model series come in the form of their Primacy and Pilot Sport tyre ranges.

Arguably their most popular tyre model to date is their Pilot Sport 4, a premium summer tyre that provides excellent all-round performance.

Michelin’s Primacy line-up also consists of many popular tyres, however, the introduction of the all-new Primacy 5 has peaked interest of motorists and industry experts alike.

The Michelin Primacy 5 is promising to be a huge success, so pair that with the already established Pilot Sport 4 and you can start to draw comparisons between both these tyres to decipher what makes them both so great – which is what will be covered in this article today.

Primacy 5 Overview

The newly released Michelin Primacy 5, a summer tyre launched globally in 2025, is set to redefine performance in its class.

Succeeding the popular Primacy 4+, the Primacy 5 delivers a remarkable 18% increase in mileage and a 4% reduction in wet braking distance when new.

This premium tyre integrates Michelin's EverGrip and EverTread technologies to enhance longevity and water evacuation capabilities.

Michelin's MaxTouch technology maximises road contact, leading to improved performance during acceleration, braking, and cornering. This technology also contributes to a longer tread life without sacrificing safety.

Given the strong track record of previous Primacy models, we expect the Primacy 5 to be one of Michelin's most successful tyre models for years to come.

Pilot Sport 4 Overview

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 is a premium summer tyre released globally back in 2016.

Engineered for peak performance, the PS4 boasts Michelin's advanced dynamic response technology, guaranteeing exceptional traction across a wide range of road surfaces.

Drawing directly from Michelin's rich history in demanding motorsport arenas like Formula E and the World Rally Championship.

The Pilot Sport 4’s tread compound is a product of expert craftsmanship and cutting-edge innovation, resulting in superior road grip and enhanced cornering capabilities.

The carefully formulated tyre compound, a unique blend of elastomers and hydrophobic silica, further optimises braking performance and wet grip, drastically minimising the risk of aquaplaning.

The PS4 replaced the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 upon the tyre’s global release.

Tyre Label Ratings

Every car tyre is required to outline their own EU regulated tyre label ratings for different key performance categories.

Primacy 5 Awards

The Michelin Primacy 5 is a recent release, meaning awards, accolades, and external tyre test wins have not been granted at the time of writing.

However, with the expectation of the Primacy 5 being a successful model for Michelin, we anticipate many awards to come the tyre’s way.

Once this happens, we will be sure to update you in this article.

Pilot Sport 4 Awards

The Pilot Sport 4 however, has seen its fair share of awards and recognition over the years.

In 2022, the PS4 claimed top spot out of 11 tyres in an ultra-high performance (UHP) summer tyre test (225/45 R18 tyres) carried out by AutoBild. In the aftermath of this tyre test, the Pilot Sport 4 was described as “Premium summer tyres with the best dynamic driving characteristics in the dry (direct steering with good feedback), safe wet handling, short wet and dry braking, low rolling resistance.”

The year before their AutoBild tyre test win saw the Pilot Sport 4 finish joint 1st out of 13th in a Tyre Reviews UHP summer tyre test (alongside the Pilot Sport 4 S and Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport). Tyre Reviews stated that the PS4 is an “extremely rounded UUHP tyre with the shortest dry braking distances, excellent aquaplaning resistance, good levels of comfort and lowest rolling resistance of the UUHP tyres.”

Michelin’s premium summer tyre has also seen success at the DriverReviews’ inaugural Customer Choice Awards, where the Pilot Sport 4 claimed the ‘Best Tyres for Hot Hatches’ award back in 2022.

Highlighting just a few of the Pilot Sport 4’s triumphs in both tyre tests and award/recognitions emphasises how much of a success the Pilot Sport 4 has been for Michelin for almost a decade now.
