Regarding tyre manufacturing, very few in the world come close to
Michelin and
Goodyear.
Both premium
tyre brands have been innovators in the tyre industry for decades, spearheading the tyre market with some of the most sought-after models out there.
Two flagship tyre models from the brands we will focus on are
Michelin’s Pilot Sport 5, and
Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, a couple of
premium tyres that represent both the brands’ modern tyre development, expertise, and innovation.
This article will lay out what makes these two models so great, describing key features of the tyres and how they fare up against each other.
The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is a summer tyre model manufactured by Michelin since 2022.
Michelin developed the Pilot Sport 5 with their Dynamic Response Technology, giving the premium tyre model enhanced levels of performance regarding its driving capabilities and steering response.
Braking and cornering is also improved, due to Michelin’s MaxTouch Construction on the tyre. This extends the model’s tread life due evenly distributing forces of acceleration, braking, and cornering.
Michelin have also developed the tyre’s tread design with Michelin’s Dual Sport Tread Design, making the summer tyre model perform efficiently on both dry and wet driving conditions.
Many
car brands such as
Volkswagen and
Porsche have chosen the Pilot Sport 5 to be an Originally Equipped (OE) tyre for their car models since the tyre’s release, further emphasising how highly rated the tyre model is.
The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 acts as a direct replacement to the
Pilot Sport 4.
The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric is a premium
summer tyre launched by Goodyear in 2022.
Designed for longevity and lower rolling resistance, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is equipped with new resins on its tyre compound, increasing the amount of contact between rubber and tarmac.
Both wet and dry handling performance is enhanced through Goodyear’s innovative technologies.
For dry surface performance, Goodyear’s ‘Dry Stability Plus Technology’ is used for improved responsiveness regarding extreme manoeuvres and more grip on the tyre.
Wet braking performance is heightened through Goodyear’s ‘Wet Braking Pro Technology’, giving the tyre more micro-contact with the surface of the road thus improving the tyre’s grip on wet surfaces.
The Goodyear tyre suits a wide variety of vehicle body styles, such as saloons, hatchbacks, and sports cars.
Goodyear have also developed the tyre model to suit majority of the
electric vehicles on the market, which is backed up by factors such as the tyre’s weight figures and torque performances.
The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 replaced the
Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 upon its release in 2022.
Tyre label ratings are EU regulated rankings of tyre performance. Label ratings will vary between different tyre sizes.
The three main performance categories that label ratings cover are:
Fuel Efficiency – Ranked A to G
Wet Grip – Ranked A to G
Tyre Noise – Ranked with numbers and A to C/Decibels (dB)
Michelin Pilot Sport 5 fuel efficiency ratings are C across all tyre sizes.
As well as fuel efficiency ratings being consistent across all tyre sizes, wet grip ratings for the Pilot Sport 5 feature an A ratings across all tyre sizes.
The Pilot Sport 5 features tyre noise level ratings of 72B, with only
285/40 R19 tyres having a noise level rating of 75B.
Fuel efficiency ratings for the Goodyear tyre model is anywhere between B and D, averaging a C ratings across the different tyre sizes.
Every tyre size available has an A wet grip rating, and noise levels range 69A and 71B.
The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 has received various awards, recognitions, and tyre test successes since its release.

DriverReviews Customer Choice Awards in 2023, the Pilot Sport 5 gathered two great recognitions – the tyre model was rated as “Highly Recommended” in the ‘Best Tyres for Hot Hatches’ category, and “Commended” in the ‘Best Tyres for Large Family Cars’ category.
Ahead of the Pilot Sport 5’s global launch, the tyre received ‘Contemporary Good Design’ awards at the Red Dot Awards in 2021.
In the short life of the model, the tyre has gathered some noticeable honours, with the tyre set to achieve more in the coming years.
Much like the Pilot Sport 5, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 has received honours and tyre test wins since its launch.
