Michelin and
Continental are two of the largest
tyre manufacturers in the world – Michelin being the largest and Continental being the fourth largest respectively (as of 2023).
These two manufacturing companies have many tyre model series that have seen varied levels of success, but the ‘Pilot Sport’ and ‘PremiumContact’ tyre models are two of the company’s most successful tyres to date.
Today, we will go over the Pilot Sport 5 and the PremiumContact 6, comparing both tyres’ features and technologies that make the models top premium tyres.
Pilot Sport 5 Overview
The
Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is a premium tyre model released globally in March 2022, offering customers premium quality, features and design.
The French manufacturing company’s model features Michelin’s state-of-the-art MaxTouch Construction to boost both performance and longevity whilst enhancing braking and cornering.
Another feature of the Pilot Sport 5 that improves the model’s capabilities is the Dual Sport Tread Design, that enhances the tyre’s wet grip and dry road performance.
The Pilot Sport model was chosen to be an OE fitted tyre to the
Volkswagen Golf for 2023.
The Pilot Sport 5 was a direct replacement for the
Pilot Sport 4 model, one of Michelin’s most successful tyre models.
The PremiumContact 6 is equipped with “Safety Silica Compound” that gives the model superior handling in all seasonal conditions. This also gives the Continental model a 15% improvement in mileage compared to its predecessors – the
SportContact 5 and
PremiumContact 5.
The Continental model has decreased tyre noise levels as well as mileage improvements, with a noise reduction of as much as 10%.
The PremiumContact 6 has originally fitted many car models over the last few years, including the
Kia EV6 and
Audi A6.
Tyre label ratings are the rankings of tyre performance factors per EU labelling. It is important to note that label ratings will vary between tyre size of the specific model.
These performance indicators rank three different performance variables:
Fuel Efficiency – Ranked A to E
Wet Grip – Ranked A to E
Tyre Noise – Ranked with numbers and A to C/Decibels
Pilot Sport 5 Label Ratings
The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 has identical tyre labelling across all sizes (that are available on
Blackcircles.com), apart from one.
The Pilot Sport 5 sees fuel efficiency rating of C in all tyre sizes apart from
275/45 R20 sized tyres, where the Michelin model has a B rating for fuel efficiency.
Wet grip rating of the premium tyre model is A across the board, as well as a tyre noise level of 72B on every tyre size.
PremiumContact 6 Label Ratings
Unlike the Pilot Sport 5, PremiumContact 6 label ratings varies more between each tyre size.
Fuel efficiency ratings are between A – D for the Continental tyre model, with an average fuel rating of a C.
The wet grip ratings are either A or B, with an A rating being prominent throughout the available tyre sizes. Noise ratings for the PremiumContact 6 range from 70dB to 75B.
Pilot Sport 5 Awards
As the Pilot Sport 5 is a new tyre model on the market, awards and recognitions are not prominent as of yet.
However, ahead of its launch, the Michelin model won the ‘Contemporary Good Design Award’ from the Red Dot Awards.
Due to its significant popularity and praise since its arrival in 2022, it could be said many awards and recognitions can be anticipated in the not-so-distant future.
PremiumContact 6 Awards
The Continental PremiumContact 6 has seen good success in the award and recognition region.
The Continental model was awarded with the IF Design Award in 2017, due to the innovative technologies of the tyres such as the tyre’s tread design.
Also in 2017, the PremiumContact 6 was awarded with the Red Dot Design Award, one of the most prestigious tyre design awards globally.
