Taking You Beyond: 5 Reasons to Choose Dunlop

Dunlop tyre on a sports car

There are tyre brands, and then there are tyre legacies. With over 130 years of innovation behind it, Dunlop is firmly the latter. Now, following a landmark acquisition by Sumitomo Rubber Industries, the brand is entering a new era. But what does this mean for the tyres we all know and love?

Keep reading to find out how Dunlop's latest innovations continue to raise the bar.

1. Born in 1888. Still Setting the Standard.

Like many great ideas, Dunlop’s was born in the unlikeliest of places. In 1887, Scottish veterinary surgeon John Boyd Dunlop solved the uncomfortable ride on his son’s tricycle using an air bladder from a football — in the process, inventing the world’s first practical pneumatic tyre

Within two years, the Dunlop trademark was registered and the brand's first plant was open in Dublin, Ireland.

What followed wasn't simply a business growing, it was the advent of an industry. The first grooved automobile tyre arrived in 1904. The steel bead tyre in 1922 trebled tyre life overnight and introduced wide tyres that would go on to set the standard for passenger car comfort. Tubeless technology came in 1948, the world's first emergency-capable run-flat in 1970, and Digital Rolling Simulation in 1998 — technology that fundamentally changed how high-performance tyres are engineered. With each milestone Dunlop continued to redefine what a tyre could be.

That spirit of invention is built into Dunlop's DNA, and it hasn't dimmed since John Boyd’s first bright idea.

2. 34 Le Mans Victories

You can’t tell Dunlop's story without talking about racing.

Since the brand's first Le Mans victory in 1926, Dunlop has accumulated a staggering 34 wins at the world's most gruelling endurance race. That’s more than any other tyre manufacturer in history. Through the 1930s, champions crossed the line on Dunlop rubber with Bentley, Alfa Romeo, Bugatti and Delahaye. In the 1960s, six F1 Drivers' Championships were claimed on Dunlop tyres, with Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, John Surtees and Jackie Stewart all taking titles. Then in 1991, the iconic Dunlop-shod Mazda 787B became the first Japanese car — and the only rotary-engined car — ever to win at Le Mans.

That racing know-how feeds directly into the development of every road tyre Dunlop makes. The brand's Development Centre in Hanau, Germany handles a plethora of OE development projects every year, working in dedicated teams alongside BMW, Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Aston Martin. When Porsche required tyres for the 911 GT2 RS, it was the Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2 that earned approval after rigorous testing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and the Nardò proving ground. That is the standard every Dunlop road tyre is engineered to clear.

3. A New Chapter Under a Single Global Owner

In 2025, Dunlop's story took another significant turn. Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) — which had produced and sold Dunlop tyres across Japan and Asia for years — acquired the brand's trademarks and intellectual property for Europe, North America and Oceania.

Now, for the first time in decades, Dunlop is a single, unified global entity under one owner, with a clear and publicly stated ambition: to return the brand to the premium segment it was built for.

With investment in OE partnerships with prestige vehicle manufacturers, expanded motorsport activity, and the integration of Active Tread technology that allows rubber to adapt dynamically to changes in moisture and temperature, Dunlop is showing how brand heritage and innovation can power change 130 years later.

4. The Blue Response TG: The New Era Starts Here

As Dunlop’s first tyre developed entirely under Sumitomo’s ownership, the new Blue Response TG arrives with a point to prove.

'TG' stands for Touring, and the designation signals a tyre engineered for the realities of modern driving: long-distance comfort and efficiency without compromising on safety or control. Compatible with internal combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles and available across 99 sizes from 15 to 21 inches, it covers the full spectrum of passenger cars and SUVs. And the technology underneath is equally thorough. A three-zone rib design delivers stability at speed and maximum grip through corners; a next-generation polymer compound with longer, more resilient chains extend mileage without sacrificing road feel; and continuous noise-reduction channels smooth airflow and damp vibration, keeping the cabin composed wherever the road leads.

Independent testing delivered a swift verdict. In Auto Motor und Sport's 2026 summer tyre shootout the Blue Response TG scored 9.6 overall and was the only tyre to be rated Outstanding. In a debut of rare authority, the TG scored perfectly in wet braking, wet and dry handling, aquaplaning and road noise.

5. A Legacy Built to Last

Dunlop's ambitions have always reached beyond the next bend. As part of SRI, the brand is expanding its use of sustainable materials, improving production efficiency and investing in the technologies that will shape future mobility. The ENASAVE 100 — a 100% fossil resource-free tyre launched back in 2013 — is a reminder that Dunlop has been thinking about responsible driving for a long time.

OE fitment remains one of the clearest signals of a tyre brand's true standing. When engineers at BMW, Porsche or Aston Martin choose a tyre for their vehicles, they are making a statement about quality and performance standards. Dunlop earns those approvals through the same rigorous engineering culture that produced so much racing success.

Choosing Dunlop means choosing 138 years of innovation, a motorsport record that no competitor can touch, and the backing of a global group with both the ambition and the resources to take the brand further than ever before. The Blue Response TG is the opening statement of that new era, and it’s already the benchmark in independent testing.
