Can I get my car serviced at any garage?

Yes, you are free to choose the garage where your car is serviced.

Thanks to European Block Exemption regulations - which the UK continues to follow after Brexit - manufacturers cannot void your warranty just because you used an independent garage. However, to keep your warranty valid, the servicing must meet the manufacturer’s specifications.

This gives you flexibility when choosing where to have your car serviced, as long as the work meets the required standards. That includes following recommended service intervals and using approved parts, oils, and fluids.

It’s also essential to maintain a complete service history. This means keeping a fully completed service book and a detailed invoice outlining all work performed - including the specific oil grade used. Doing so helps support any future warranty claims by showing that the vehicle has been properly maintained.

If your vehicle is no longer under warranty, you have even greater freedom to choose service providers, including options that do not follow manufacturer specifications.

These include:

  • Interim Service
  • Full Service
  • Major Service

Most service centres offer these options, or variations on these, and so give you a wide range of options when it comes to booking your next car service.
