Over the past 5 years, the Peugeot 3008 has become an increasingly popular family SUV. With a smart cabin and comfortable ride.
However, like all cars, it has it’s own set of predictable recurring issues.
The main themes for the Peugeot 3008 tend to revolve around electrical and/or software glitches. As well as diesel emissions system faults and a handful of recall campaigns.
Mk1 (2009–2016). Older now, so issues are typically age/mileage related. Such as electrical issues and diesel injector problems. There are also issues with DPF clogging.
Mk2 (2017–2024). This is the most common UK used market generation. And very sought after. The faults which tend to occur include infotainment/electrical glitches, AdBlue/DPF issues, and a number of recalls.
| Symptom | Likely cause(s) | First step(s) |
|---|---|---|
| “Urea/AdBlue” warning despite full tank | AdBlue system fault, injector blockage, software calibration | Scan for codes; check recall/updates; tank/injector test |
| DPF warning / limp mode (diesel) | DPF loading from short trips; system fault | Do a proper motorway regen run; if persists, forced regen/clean |
| Indicators/lights behaving oddly, random warnings | ECU/software glitches, wiring/connector issues | Battery health check; dealer ECU software update |
| Hesitation/shudder on auto shifts | Gearbox software/sensor issue, oil leak, worn clutch/coupling | Don’t ignore—get gearbox diagnostic; check fluid leaks |
| Electric handbrake won’t release | EPB switch fault, electrical issue | Follow handbook reset procedure; if recurring, inspect switch/module |
| Oil leak after service / oil smell | Sump plug/sealing plug not tightened (recall window) | Inspect for leaks immediately; check recall history |
Always confirm by VIN using the DVSA checker and/or Peugeot’s own recall tool.
| Recall code | Issue | Risk / symptom |
|---|---|---|
| R/2024/497 | Front lower control arm bracket bolts may break | Loss of control risk |
| R/2025/246 | Premature camshaft drive chain wear (1.5 BlueHDi context) | Abnormal noise / chain break |
| R/2025/277 | High-pressure fuel pipe connection may be loose | Fuel leak / fire risk |
| R/2025/344 | OBD performance for SCR/DPF may be incorrect | MIL may not illuminate; emissions compliance |
In What Car?’s most recent survey, the Peugeot 3008 ranked mid-pack (20th of 34) in the Family SUV class with a score of 90.6%.
Making it a ‘decent overall’ result, but not class-leading.
Owners most often mention electrical glitches and diesel exhaust/emissions system problems, with petrol models tending to be a bit smoother mechanically than diesels.
I had a 2021 plate Peugeot 3008 Gti – and found it to be a very comfortable and enjoyable car to drive.
The only bugbear I had with my Peugeot 3008 (and to be fair it is a pretty big one…!) was that it failed its first MOT – with worn brakes.
These had been a concern in the part – as there was a high-pitched squeal that the car made at certain times… but not always. That mechanics had not been able to identify.
That aside, I did enjoy the Peugeot 3008 – but rising costs when it came time to change cars led me to an MG HS.
