The M4 motorway is the third largest motorway in the UK and runs from London to South Wales. Acting as a vital connection between England and Wales.
The English section of the M4 runs all the way to the Severn Bridge and was constructed over a ten year period between 1961 and 1971.
The M4 is the only motorway in Wales and overall spans a distance of approximately 189 miles (or 304 km).

M4 Travel Tips
The M4 is a vital connection from London to South Wales. As such it can be a very busy road to navigate.
Given the high volume of traffic that drives on the M4 on a regular basis, it is a good idea to avoid as much as possible heavy traffic.
Here are some tips to try and reduce the amount of time you are stuck in traffic on the M5:
- Before you begin your journey, quickly check the latest traffic reports. This is how you can identify any potential incidents or delays on your route. If there is a major delay record, then it will give you time to assess other travel or route options. Or at the least prepare you mentally for delays if you can’t avoid that section of road.

Staying aware of any updates after you have set off again allows you to make decisions to change routes if needed when on the road.
