How Early Can You Get An MOT?

How Early Can You Get An MOT?

Your car’s MOT might feel like one of those things that creeps up on you—but it doesn’t have to. Knowing how early you can book an MOT can help you plan ahead, avoid last-minute stress, and stay on the right side of the law.

Let’s take a look at how early you can book, what happens if you book too early, and why planning ahead could save you time, hassle and potentially even money.

How Early Can I Book an MOT?

You can book your MOT test up to one month (minus a day) before your current MOT certificate expires. If you stick to this window, your next MOT date will stay the same—so you won’t lose any days.

For example, if your MOT runs out on 10th August, you can take the test from 11th July onwards. If your car passes, the new certificate will run until 10th August next year.

Early MOT Test

It is possible to book an MOT even earlier. You can, in fact, take the test any time you like.

However, if it’s more than one month early, your expiry date will shift.

So if you get your MOT done on 1st June, and your current certificate doesn’t run out until 10th August, your new MOT will expire on 31st May the following year. You’d lose those extra weeks.

This might not be a problem if you’ve got a long journey planned or want peace of mind - but it’s worth being aware of.

What If My Car Fails an Early MOT?

Here’s where it gets a bit tricky.

If you take your MOT early and your car fails, the failure is recorded straight away - even if your current certificate is still valid.

That means you can’t legally drive the vehicle, unless:

It’s a good reason to be cautious with early MOTs. Make sure your car is in good shape, or allow time to fix any issues before your current certificate runs out.

Why Book an MOT Early?

There are a few good reasons to get ahead of the game:

How Much Does an Early MOT Cost?

The cost of an MOT is capped legally at £54.50 – this is the same throughout the county, no matter when you take it.

However, garages in the UK are allowed to charge less than this. You will often find that many garages will lower the price to attract customers.

Most garages charge between £40 and £50, though it can vary slightly by location.

If your car needs repairs, that’s when costs can increase. If that is the case, it's worth using the early window to your advantage.

Need Help Tracking Your MOT?

It’s easy to lose track of your MOT date.

That’s why we recommend setting a reminder or using an MOT checker tool to see your current status.

MOTs - Book Smart, Drive Safe

Booking your MOT early can help you avoid stress, spot issues before they become serious, and keep your renewal date intact. Just remember the golden rule:

Early MOT FAQs

Can I drive if my MOT has expired?

No. It’s illegal unless you’re driving to a pre-booked test or repair. You could face a fine of up to £1,000.

Is there a grace period for MOT expiry?

No. The law doesn’t allow for a grace period once your MOT has run out.

Will I lose days if I test more than a month early?

Yes. Your new certificate will start from the date of the test, not the old expiry.

Does a failed early MOT cancel my current one?

Yes, if your car fails, the failure is logged immediately. You can only drive it to be fixed or retested
