Modern Ford vehicles are packed with sensors designed to monitor safety. As well as emissions, braking, steering and engine performance.
When something isn’t working properly, your Ford Transit dashboard warning lights alert you quickly. So you can ensure that a minor issue doesn’t become a costly repair.
Understanding what each warning symbol means could prevent serious mechanical damage or, even more important, an accident.
Ford uses a simple traffic-light colour system:
If a red warning light appears while driving you should reduce speed immediately and pull over to safety. Make sure you do this in a safe way without causing an obstruction to other road users.
Red lights indicate serious problems that may affect safety or cause engine damage.
| Warning Light | What It Means | What You Should Do |
|---|---|---|
| Brake System Warning | Low brake fluid, parking brake engaged, or brake system fault | Stop safely. Check parking brake. If fluid is low or light stays on, do not continue driving |
| Engine Coolant Temperature | Engine overheating | Stop immediately. Allow engine to cool. Check coolant level |
| Oil Pressure Warning | Low oil pressure or lubrication failure | Stop engine immediately. Check oil level. Call for assistance if level is normal |
| Airbag (SRS) Warning | Airbag or seatbelt pretensioner fault | Get inspected urgently - safety systems may not deploy |
| Stop Safely Warning | Major electrical or system fault | Pull over immediately and switch off engine |
Driving with these warnings can lead to severe engine damage or brake failure.
Amber lights mean something isn’t working properly but may not require immediate stopping.
| Warning Light | Meaning | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Check Engine / Engine Management Light | Emissions or engine control fault | Reduce heavy acceleration. Book diagnostics ASAP |
| Powertrain Warning | Transmission, engine or drivetrain issue | Drive gently. Seek inspection soon |
| Glow Plug (Diesel) | Diesel preheat or glow plug fault | If flashing, get checked promptly |
| DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) | Filter blocked | Drive at steady higher RPM (around 2,000+) for 15 minutes to allow regeneration |
| AdBlue Warning | Low diesel emissions fluid | Top up soon - vehicle will not restart if empty |
If the engine light flashes rather than staying steady, this usually indicates a misfire - reduce speed immediately.
| Warning Light | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| ABS Warning Light | Anti-lock braking fault | Normal braking works, but no ABS. Drive carefully |
| Stability / Traction Control | System intervening or fault | If steady, system malfunction - get checked |
| Brake Pad Wear | Pads worn thin | Replace soon to avoid disc damage |
If ABS and Brake warnings appear together, stop driving.
| Warning Light | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Power Steering (EPS) | Steering assistance fault | Steering may feel heavy. Drive carefully |
| Check Wheel Warning | Wheel alignment or suspension issue | Book inspection promptly |
| Warning Light | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPMS) | One or more tyres under-inflated | Check and adjust pressures |
| Low Fuel Warning | Fuel running low | Refuel as soon as possible |
| Water in Fuel (Diesel) | Fuel filter contains water | Drain or service fuel filter soon |
Driving on under-inflated tyres increases fuel consumption and tyre wear.
Many newer Ford models feature advanced safety systems. If these warnings appear, the vehicle can usually still be driven - but the system may not assist you.
| System | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Lane Keeping Aid | System off or fault |
| Blind Spot Monitoring (BLIS) | Radar blocked or malfunction |
| Pre-Collision Assist / Forward Alert | System detecting rapid approach or malfunction |
| Auto Start-Stop (Amber) | System fault |
| Adaptive Cruise Control | System unavailable or standby |
Heavy rain, snow or dirt on sensors can temporarily trigger these warnings.
These lights simply confirm systems are active:
These do not indicate faults.
Ignoring warning lights - especially oil, coolant or brake warnings - can result in major mechanical failure.
You can usually drive short distances if the light is steady, but continued driving may worsen the problem. If flashing, reduce speed immediately.
The oil pressure, brake system and engine temperature lights are among the most serious, as they indicate risks of engine seizure or brake failure.
Most dashboard lights briefly illuminate during ignition as a self-check. If a light stays on after starting, it indicates a problem.
