The
BMW 3 Series has been the default executive saloon in the UK for decades.
It’s consistently one of the best cars in its class to drive, and used examples offer a strong blend of refinement, performance and practicality.
That said, different generations - and especially different engines - come with their own fault patterns.
BMW 3 Series Generations at a Glance
- E90 / E91 / E92 / E93 (2005–2013)
Strong cars overall, however, there were multiple reports from those which used the N47 engines of issues with timing-chain wear. As well as turbo-seal issues. - F30 / F31 / F34 (2012–2019)
One of the most reliable modern 3 Series. However, there were some repeated problems with the timing-chain tensioner noise. - G20 / G21 (2019–present)
Still dependable, but more tech brings more iDrive connectivity issues. Some cars suffered from rear diff seal leaks.
3 Series Issues Cheat-Sheet
- Early diesels. Timing chain noise/wear.
- Diesels generally. EGR cooler leak recall actions.
- F30/F31 cars Bluetooth pairing drops and heavy brake wear.
- G20 cars (2019–): iDrive connectivity problems. Occasional rear diff leaks.

Is the BMW 3 Series Reliable?
In most cases the answer is yes. Especially the F30/F31 generation.
- In What Car?’s latest surveys, 3 Series diesels scored about 96.5% and ranked near the top of the executive class. Petrols also came out strong at roughly 92%.
- Owners mainly report minor infotainment glitches rather than major mechanical failures. Cars after 2015 tend to be the most reliable.
What to Check on a Used 3 Series
When buying a used 3 Series, make sure to do a full service history check. This is especially true for diesel. Check for long oil intervals in particular.
When test driving, listen out for irregular timing chain noise. This is characterised as a rear-engine rattle.
Make sure that you confirm EGR recall completion on any diesel build between 2015–2017.
Due to the issues with some infotainment modules, if possible, try to give the Bluetooth + iDrive a thorough test.
And, of course, inspect alloys and
tyres. Many used 3 Series were company cars with kerb scars.
BMW 3 Series Issues FAQs
Is the BMW 3 Series reliable?
In most cases the answer is yes. Especially the F30/F31 generation.
What are the most common BMW 3 Series engine problems?
Early diesels were linked to timing chain noise/wear, and diesels generally have had EGR cooler leak recall actions. Some engines also show VANOS solenoid or oil-feed related limp-home behaviour.
Which BMW 3 Series generation is considered the most reliable?
The F30/F31 generation (2012–2019) is widely considered one of the most reliable modern 3 Series.
What should I check before buying a used BMW 3 Series?
Check full service history (especially diesel oil intervals), listen for timing chain rattle on test drive, confirm EGR recall completion for 2015–2017 diesels, and test Bluetooth/iDrive thoroughly. Also inspect alloys and tyres for kerb damage.
