Brake horsepower (BHP) is a measure of an engine's horsepower before the loss of power caused by the gearbox, alternator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components like power steering pumps, muffled exhaust systems, etc. It's a more accurate representation of an engine's power because it's measured at the engine's output shaft, rather than at the drive wheels, which accounts for the drivetrain losses.
PS, short for Pferdestärke, is the German word for horsepower, and it's used to measure the same concept as BHP but is based on a slightly different calculation. One PS is defined as the ability to lift 75 kg over a distance of one meter in one second, which translates to 735.5 watts.
The conversion factor between BHP and PS is very close due to their similar definitions. To convert BHP to PS, multiply the BHP value by 1.01387. This factor accounts for the slight differences in how each unit is defined.
