What to bring to your MOT

When you take your car to its MOT appointment, bring the following with you:

Bring these

• V5C logbook – needed for your car's first MOT, or if you've changed your number plate. If yours is missing you can apply for a replacement online, by phone or by post for a £25 fee.
• Valid driving licence – you can't legally drive your car to the test centre without one.
• Confirmation – a note of your order number/order confirmation.

Worth bringing, but not required

• Your current MOT certificate
• Tax documentation
• Your vehicle service logbook
• Your locking wheel nut key

What to bring for a car service

A car service needs less paperwork than an MOT, but a few things will help it go smoothly:

• Locking wheel nut key – if your car has locking wheel nuts, the mechanic will need this to take the wheels off and check your brakes and suspension.
• Service book – bring it along and the garage can stamp it to confirm the work was carried out. A full service history helps protect your car's resale value.
• An empty-ish boot – not essential, but clearing it out gives the technician easy access to anything stored under the floor, such as your spare tyre.
• MOT certificate – not usually needed for a standard service, though some garages ask for it if they're carrying out extra checks or combining your service with an MOT.

Bringing these along keeps your service efficient and your maintenance records up to date.
