Old faithful: The top 5 most reliable vans

Line of generic vans

Van life? No, we’re after a van for life. Hop aboard as we take a look at the most reliable vans on the market.

Packed to the brim with tools, materials, merchandise, food, people… Our vans see it all. And the unfortunate truth is, no matter the cargo, when hauling heavy loads for long distances, wear and tear is inevitable.

Vans are built for this: there are many robust options out there to ensure uptime is maximized, and repair costs are minimised. But, if you’re in search of the crème de la crème, we’ve done the work.

So, from MOT heroes to rock-solid warranty bets to let you get the job done, we've set out to answer the question: what are the most reliable vans?

5. Toyota Proace

You might have seen this one coming, but hold on, all may not be what it seems. Now, Toyota have cultivated a reputation for building vehicles which simply won’t quit, with recent surveys pinning the Japanese manufacturer as the UK’s most reliable volume car brand.

However, (plot twist) the Toyota Proace isn’t a car, and arguably, isn’t even a Toyota. As part of the Stellantis van range, the Proace shares its underpinnings with the Vauxhall Vivaro, Citroën Dispatch, and what feels like half of the medium sized vans on the market today.

So, what does the Proace offer to stand out amongst the Stellantis clones, and to fill Toyota’s considerably sized reliability boots? A market leading vote of confidence in the form of an impressive warranty “up-to-10-years” or 100,000 miles at no extra cost.

For us, this peace-of-mind offering gives some weight to the Proace’s claims of “quality, reliability and durability”, and provides some confidence that this is a reliable van here for the long haul.

4. Nissan e-NV200

Next up, representing the most reliable small vans, we have the Nissan e-NV200. This forward-thinking electric LCV capitalized on the move towards LEZs and city centre restrictions. It gained a foothold in the taxi and delivery spheres throughout the 2010s and built a reputation for longevity and low ownership costs.

So what did Nissan do with this durable little runner? They pulled it from the market, obviously. But despite being out of production since the Nissan Townstar’s 2022 release, the e-NV200 has endured, with on-the-road statistics showing barely any reduction in the number of the older electric models buzzing around UK streets.

We’d say that although this electric van’s range of up to 187 miles remains very competitive, it’s the sheer amount of these still out on the road is the true indicator of their ability to go the distance.

3. Ford Transit, Custom, and Connect

Transit vans on a reliability list? But what about their age-old Achillies heel: rust? While your eyes do not deceive you, hear us out, because we think corroded white Fords might be a thing of the past.

The updated commercial ‘Ford Pro’ range, which includes the UK’s first and second most popular vans in the Ford Transit Custom and standard Transit respectively (as well as the in demand Transit Connect), has seen these models popping up towards the podium positions in recent reliability surveys.

With the blue oval simply selling more LCVs than anybody else, the brand overall has now claimed top spot in many reliability charts, in part down to the unmatched volume of vehicles pitching in to the 9-to-5.

More vans mean more readily available replacement parts. Partner this with Ford’s vast service network, including proactive uptime management systems to stay one step ahead of potential breakdowns and, perhaps, the rusty reliability reputation can truly fall into the rear view mirror.

2. Volkswagen Transporter

VW Transporters have a rich history of dependability, and although we’re not sure we’d put this to the test with their iconic early models, new iterations have a hard earned reputation for simple, solid design, landing them the UK’s highest van MOT pass rate.

At its core, the Transporter is a robust galvanised steel body wrapped around an uncomplicated engine, known for the ability to pump out milage figures into the hundreds-of-thousands without a single trip to the van doctors. The 2.0-litre diesel variants, in particular, have received much acclaim for their resilience.

There are caveats of course, and as a relatively premium offering VW’s mid-sized van comes in at a higher price than many rivals, with many bells and whistles stacked on top of this sturdy foundation. But at the base level, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication here (not often we get to quote Leonardo Da Vinci), and the German brand has applied this principle to create a trustworthy LCV which can get you and your cargo to the destination.

1. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

And here it is again, a serial winner, the Sprinter. Holding the number one spot on reliability polls for years now, if a true all-round copper-bottomed carrier is what you need, we reckon this is your best bet — and our most reliable van pick.

Simply built to last, the Mercedes Sprinter offers the bulletproof build and component quality which we associate with the three-pointed star, resulting in low breakdown and warranty claim rates.

Despite all the fancy interconnected tech packed in to keep them running, Sprinter issues and recalls are comparatively rare within the large van world. Of course, hiccups do inevitably occur such as the dreaded 10 start countdown, and maintenance is key — luckily with the way these fly off the shelves, there is huge global service network à la the Ford Transit should your van pick up a rare injury.

Again, like the VW, this build and service quality does come with a pricetag, but when repairs are about as uncommon as a visible solar eclipse in the UK, we see this as a ‘buy nice or buy twice’ scenario.

We all need something to rely on. Whether you’re in need of a small, medium, or large LCV, our pick of the most reliable vans should have something for you. But which hard worker would you choose to keep your business moving?
