The new Toyota Yaris Cross: a compact SUV that packs a punch. Toyota say it‘s been specifically designed for the European market, but have they ticked all the boxes? Let’s find out.
The Yaris Cross rivals popular models like the Nissan Juke and the Renault Captur, appealing to those wanting a smaller car without sacrificing power. It embraces its SUV-ness with a bold and modern design. Its raised ride height and chunky plastic cladding give it a rugged stance, while sharp lines and sculpted edges add a touch of sportiness. Compared to the standard Yaris, the Cross boasts a more imposing presence on the road, appealing to those who desire a more commanding vehicle.

There’s a cross in the box for powertrain options: as it offers a dual hybrid strategy. Drivers can choose between the established 114bhp hybrid system or the new 129bhp variant. The latter boasts a larger electric motor-generator and tweaked power control unit, increasing total system output by 12%. This translates to a nippier 0-62mph time of 10.7 seconds, shaving half a second off the previous model.
Inside, the Yaris Cross offers a well-designed cabin with a focus on comfort and technology. High-quality materials and soft-touch surfaces create a premium feel. A new 12.3-inch digital driver's display features in higher-grade models, offering a customizable and modern interface. Toyota's latest Smart Connect multimedia system, complete with cloud-based navigation and a responsive voice assistant, further elevates the driving experience.
Toyota has prioritized efficiency and performance in the new Yaris Cross and it looks like they’ve paired this with Michelin tyres. To get the most out of the Cross, buyers should choose tyres for their grip and handling capabilities to complement its sharper acceleration and improved cornering dynamics, making for a more engaging drive.
With a starting price £25,530, customers can enhance the sportier elements with the GR Sport, equipped with the new 129bhp engine, at £31,320, with Premiere Editions hitting the best part of £35,000.
Does the new Yaris Cross deliver on its promise of a sportier, more powerful drive while maintaining its commitment to efficiency? And would you drive one home?
