While almost every driver is looking for a versatile all-round tyre, everyone has their own unique set of priorities. The high-mileage motorway commuter wants a quiet, comfortable cabin and rubber that goes the distance. The EV owner wants to eke out the most miles from each charge. The family driver wants dependable grip and short braking distances when the heavens open on the school run. And the eco-minded driver wants to trim their running costs and carbon footprint on every journey.
That's the thinking behind
Michelin's Primacy family. Rather than a single one-size-fits-all touring tyre, the range branches into distinct models — the
Primacy 5, the new
Primacy 5 Energy, the long-serving
Primacy 4+, and the eco-designed
e.Primacy — each tuned for a different priority. That means that regardless of what’s under your bonnet, Michelin builds a Primacy model that suits how you drive.
Here's how each one stacks up, the clever engineering behind it, and the kind of driver it's made for.

If you’re looking for a premium touring tyre which covers all the bases, the Primacy 5 is Michelin's headline act. It's pitched squarely at saloons and SUVs of every powertrain, and it's engineered to end the usual trade-off where longer life comes at the expense of safety, or comfort comes at the expense of grip.
The standout claim is longevity. Michelin says the Primacy 5 delivers around 18% more mileage than the outgoing Primacy 4+, a figure measured on an electric vehicle precisely because EVs are notoriously hard on rubber. In everyday use, that translates to roughly 25,000 to 45,000 miles depending on how and where you drive. Two technologies do the heavy lifting here: MaxTouch, which spreads the forces of acceleration, braking and cornering evenly across the contact patch so the tyre wears down uniformly rather than in patches, and EverTread, a hard-wearing tread pattern designed to keep performing mile after mile.
But don’t think safety gets left behind in the pursuit of mileage. The Primacy 5 earns top marks (an A wet grip rating) on the European label. This is in part due to Michelin's new EverGrip technology — a high-performance compound paired with a deeper, more open tread that clears water more effectively — helping Primacy 5 brake around 4% shorter in the wet when new, while holding onto that performance as it wears. For anyone who drives through chaotic British weather, that consistency from the first mile to the last makes all the difference.
Then there's refinement, where the Primacy 5 quietly shines. Its Silent Rib Gen-3 technology is built to reduce vibration and tyre roar — an issue which becomes much more apparent in a near-silent electric car, where there's no engine note to mask it. The result is a calmer, quieter cabin.
It’s a natural choice for family SUVs like
Volkswagen’s Tiguan or
Kia’s Sportage, a premium saloon such as a
BMW 3 Series, or an EV like a
Tesla Model 3. If you cover serious annual mileage and want long life, quiet comfort and dependable wet safety in one package, this is a great all-rounder.
Launched in 2026, the Primacy 5 Energy is the efficiency specialist of the family — and it arrived with a genuinely rare achievement. It's the first premium Michelin summer tyre to score a clean sweep of top AAA marks on the European label: A for energy efficiency, A for wet grip and A for external noise. In a market where the average summer tyre rolls in at a C for efficiency, that's worth shouting about.
Such efficiency comes from Michelin’s Energy Passive 2.0 technology — a blend of a reworked elastomer, a new resin and an optimised internal structure that reduces the energy the tyre wastes as it rolls. For an EV driver, lower rolling resistance means more miles per charge; Michelin quotes up to 10% extra range, or as much as 70km (around 43 miles) of additional driving on a charge for some vehicles. For petrol and hybrid drivers, the same physics show up as up to 6% lower fuel consumption. Then, to further bolster those credentials, Michelin uses Slim Belt technology to trim raw material use while keeping the casing strong, further reducing rolling resistance.
Importantly, none of that efficiency comes at the cost of safety or longevity. The Primacy 5 energy carries an A rating for wet braking and stops up to 8% shorter in the wet than its predecessor — both when new and when worn. Energy Passive 2.0 also helps it deliver class-leading mileage in Europe, and on the comfort front, Piano Acoustic and Silent Rib Gen-3 technologies keep things hushed, with that A noise rating cutting the sound you hear behind the wheel dramatically compared with a noisier C-rated tyre.
This one's made for the range-watcher. If you drive an EV such as a CUPRA Born or a Tesla Model Y and you'd rather not stop to charge any sooner than you have to, the extra miles add up fast. It's equally compelling for hybrid and company-car drivers keeping a close eye on fuel bills, and for anyone who wants the greenest credentials without relinquishing grip or refinement.
The Primacy 4+ is an established, dependable member of the family — and it remains a hugely popular pick for good reason. It took over from the original 2018 Primacy 4 and continues its job as a premium summer tyre for the everyday stuff: the daily commute, the motorway slog, the long family trip to the coast.
Its calling card is wet-weather safety that lasts. The Primacy 4+ is built around Michelin's EverGrip technology, which pairs a latest-generation rubber compound with a clever self-rejuvenating tread made up of two different rubber rigidities. As the tyre wears down, fresh and effective tread is revealed beneath, so it keeps gripping and keeps clearing water deep into its life. The result is leading wet braking right down to the legal tread depth and strong aquaplaning control — in Michelin's own testing, the worn 4+ pulled up noticeably shorter than rivals at the time.
It's also built to go the distance. MaxTouch construction maximises the rubber in contact with the road and spreads the forces of acceleration, braking and cornering evenly, which encourages more uniform wear and a longer tread life — Michelin's testing showed it outlasting premium rivals. Plus, a handy tread-wear indicator takes the guesswork out of knowing when it's time for a replacement.
If you drive a mainstream hatchback or saloon — think Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus or a Vauxhall Astra — and you want genuine Michelin quality, dependable long life and wet-weather safety that holds up as the tyre ages, the Primacy 4+ is a sensible, trusted everyday choice.
Even before the phrase EV tyres was a buzzword in the rubber industry, the e.Primacy was Michelin's answer for drivers who put eco considerations first. It's an eco-designed summer tyre built to sip energy, lower emissions and stretch every drop of fuel or every percent of battery — all while being made to last.
The engineering is all about minimising wasted energy. Its rolling resistance is around 27% lower on average than its leading rivals, achieved through an Energy Passive Compound that reduces how much energy the rubber loses as it flexes. There's clever construction at work too: an EnergyAirShield Compound that limits energy dissipation, a CoolRunning Sidewall that absorbs less energy as it flexes through each rotation, and a slim belt that uses fewer raw materials. For an EV, all of that adds up to roughly 7% more battery range on average — about 18 extra miles on a car with a 350-mile range. For a combustion or hybrid car, it means lower fuel use and reduced CO2.
Efficiency isn't the whole story, though. The e.Primacy keeps the safety and longevity Michelin is known for, using a U-shaped groove design to maintain strong water evacuation and MaxTouch to even out wear for a long, dependable life.
It’s a tyre for the eco-minded driver — perhaps the owner of an early EV like a Nissan Leaf, a hybrid such as a Toyota Prius, or anyone running an economical petrol car who wants to squeeze running costs and shrink their footprint. If lower fuel bills, extra range and eco credentials are top of your list, the e.Primacy was built with you in mind.
The beauty of the Primacy range is that it lets you choose based on what you actually need from your tyres, not just simply what’s available for your powertrain type.
Whichever priority you value most— longevity, range, refinement or value — there's a Primacy engineered to deliver it. And every one of them carries the same underlying promise that's defined Michelin for over a century: premium performance that's built to last.
