M60 Road Closures

M60 Road Closures

The M60 motorway (widely known as the Manchester Outer Ring Road) is a major orbital motorway in Northwest England. It acts as the key connection between the various towns and metropolitan boroughs surrounding Manchester city centre, linking communities such as Stockport, Sale, Salford, Bury, Oldham, and Ashton-under-Lyne

Covers the distance of 36.1 miles and runs in a continuous orbital loop starting and ending near Stockport while fully encircling Greater Manchester.

Due to its heavy usage as a central commuter hub and one of the busiest highway sections in the United Kingdom, the road undergoes regular wear and tear, necessitating routine maintenance, resurfacing, and safety upgrades.

M60 Travel Tips

There are a few quick and simple tips that can help ensure your journey on the M60 is as painless as possible. These include:

  1. Check live traffic feeds before departing – Utilise real-time GPS routing or National Highways bulletins to check for active incidents or late-running overnight closures before you turn the key.
  2. Understand "Clockwise" vs. "Anticlockwise" – Since it is a circular ring road, directions are labelled as Clockwise (Carriageway A) or Anticlockwise (Carriageway B) instead of traditional compass points.
  3. Adhere to the dynamic variable speed limits – Significant stretches of the M60 operate as a controlled smart motorway. Keep a close eye on overhead electronic gantries, as speed limits change dynamically to manage congestion.
  4. Navigate major interchanges with extra care – Complex junctions like Simister Island (Junction 18) and the Worsley Braided Interchange require heavy lane-weaving. Get into your desired lane early to avoid sudden cut-ins.
  5. Time your journey around peak rush hours – The ring road experiences heavy delays during standard morning (07:30–09:30) and evening (16:30–18:30) commute windows. Travel outside these times whenever possible.
