A77 Road Closures

A77 Road Closures

The A77 is a major trunk road in southwestern Scotland, acting as a vital economic link between the Central Belt and the southwest coast. It serves as the primary route connecting Glasgow (via the M77) through Ayrshire down to the ferry ports at Cairnryan, providing essential access to Northern Ireland.

Spanning roughly 90 miles, the road shifts from a busy commuter dual carriageway around Kilmarnock and Ayr into a more challenging, scenic single carriageway as it cuts through rural coastal towns like Girvan and Maybole.

Due to heavy use from freight traffic, commuters and ferry passengers, planned maintenance and surface improvements are frequent. This makes it essential for drivers to check for overnight closures and local lane restrictions before travelling.

A77 Road Closures: Next 7 Days

Given the high volume of traffic and heavy freight on the A77, there are frequent repairs and roadworks that are required.

Each day we compile a list of the planned road closures on the A77, allowing you to check if there is an A77 closure today

A77 Travel Tips

The A77 features highly distinct driving environments, from fast dual carriageway commuter routes to tightly winding coastal routes. Good planning can significantly reduce your journey time.

  1. Watch for 'Ferry Surges': Traffic on the single-carriageway sections further south can heavily bottleneck right after a cruise ferry docks at Cairnryan. Expect sudden influxes of heavy commercial freight and long-distance traffic driving north from the port.
  2. Mind the Average Speed Cameras: The A77 uses a rigorous average speed camera safety system. Large stretches—particularly between Girvan and Ayr—are consistently monitored. Ensure you safely maintain the designated speed limit through active roadwork zones.
  3. Plan Around Rush Hour Bottlenecks: The northern sections near the Kilmarnock bypass and the Ayr bypass handle dense regional traffic during work rush hours. Expect standard delays on weekdays between 07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:00.
  4. Fuel Up Early: Service stations and petrol stations become noticeably sparse south of Ayr. While there are large major services near the Monkton Milestones roundabout, options narrow down to smaller local facilities once you hit the rural southern stretches.
