A1 Road Closures

A1 Road Closures

The A1 is the UK’s longest numbered road, stretching around 410 miles (660 km) from London to Edinburgh.

It links major towns and cities including Peterborough, Doncaster, Newcastle upon Tyne, and Berwick-upon-Tweed before crossing into Scotland.

While parts of the A1 have been upgraded to motorway standard (A1(M)), much of the route remains a dual carriageway.

This mixed layout, combined with its heavy use for both local and long-distance travel, means the road is often the focus of essential maintenance and improvement works.

A1 Road Closures: Next 7 Days

Due to its strategic importance, the A1 is subject to regular upgrades, resurfacing, and safety improvements. These projects often require lane closures, diversions, and overnight work to keep disruption to a minimum.

We compile and update details of planned A1 road closures and roadworks for the week ahead to help you plan your journey in advance and avoid unnecessary delays.

Travel Tips for the A1

With its long stretches, varied road layouts, and frequent works, the A1 presents its own unique driving challenges. Here are some practical ways to make your trip smoother:

  1. Check both planned and live updates. Planned works are listed in advance, but unexpected incidents can happen. Combining an advance check of official closure schedules with live traffic apps can help you avoid last-minute surprises.
  2. Time your travel to avoid work zones. Many A1 upgrades and resurfacing jobs take place overnight or during off-peak hours. If you can, schedule your journey outside these times to reduce the risk of hitting temporary closures.
  3. Use official diversion routes. During A1 closures, follow the signed diversion routes rather than relying solely on sat-nav shortcuts. These routes are designed to handle heavier traffic and avoid unsuitable rural roads.
  4. Keep an eye on fuel stops. Long stretches of the A1 can be without services for several miles. Especially in rural sections. If you’re rerouted due to roadworks, you could pass fewer fuel stations, so top up earlier than usual.
  5. Be prepared for changing conditions. Roadworks can make some sections narrower or more challenging, so adjust speed and spacing accordingly.
