Michelin winter tyres are cold-weather tyres built to deliver maximum grip and shorter braking on cold, wet, snow-covered and icy roads once temperatures drop below 7°C. The type of conditions that a summer tyre struggles to gain traction in.
Sold as the Michelin Alpin range, with the Pilot Alpin for performance cars, they use a flexible low-temperature compound and a heavily siped, directional tread. Each carries the 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) certification for severe snow. They're designed for seasonal use through the coldest months, typically October to April.
The Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV is a 4x4 winter tyre, designed to deliver excellent performance in freezing winter weather.
Michelin's winter tyres use a specially formulated low-temperature rubber compound that stays soft and flexible in the cold. That flexibility is what generates traction on freezing, wet, snow-covered and icy roads throughout the winter months. Roughly October to April, whenever temperatures sit below 7°C.
A directional V-shaped tread pattern channels water and slush clear of the contact patch to resist aquaplaning, while thousands of fine sipes and biting edges interlock with snow for grip and control. On the latest Alpin 7, Michelin increased the sipe density to improve snow braking by 6% over the Alpin 6 - the design behind the range's 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) winter certification.
Using its expertise in 3D metal printing, Michelin gives the Alpin 7 progressive evolving sipes. New grooves emerge as the tyre wears, so snow and wet grip hold up deep into the tyre's life rather than fading with tread depth. You get dependable winter performance for longer, a lower cost per mile, and compliance with the latest EU worn-tyre performance rules.
The Michelin Alpin range is a reference in winter tyres - six generations and more than 13 million sold across 32 countries - and Michelin is the most awarded tyre brand in European independent testing. The current Alpin 7 regularly finishes among the top winter tyres in tests from bodies such as ADAC and Auto Bild, with clear gains in snow braking and rolling-resistance efficiency over the model it replaced.

Yes — Michelin’s Alpin range is one of the most consistently top-rated winter tyres when put through the rigours of an independent tyre test. It delivers short braking distances and dependable grip on cold, wet, snow-covered and icy roads, giving you strong cold-weather safety through the toughest months of the year.
Fit them once temperatures regularly drop below 7°C — typically from around October to April in the UK. That’s the point at which a summer or all season tyre begins to harden and lose grip, while a winter tyre’s cold-weather compound stays flexible and keeps working.
Yes. Every tyre in the Alpin range carries the 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) marking, which certifies genuine snow capability rather than just the basic M+S label. Their heavily siped, directional tread bites into snow and clears slush, and the latest Alpin 7 improves snow braking by 6% over the Alpin 6.
It’s not recommended. Winter tyres are built for cold conditions, so in warm summer weather they give longer braking distances and wear more quickly. For year-round driving on one set, a Michelin CrossClimate all season tyre is the better choice — winter tyres are designed to be fitted for the colder months and swapped back afterwards.
Not in the UK — they’re optional here. But if you drive in mainland Europe over winter, many countries require 3PMSF-certified winter tyres at certain times or in certain conditions. As the Alpin range is 3PMSF-certified, it meets those legal requirements.
Used seasonally, a set of Michelin winter tyres typically lasts several winters, depending on mileage, driving style and conditions. The Alpin 7’s evolving tread pattern reveals new grooves as it wears, so grip holds up deep into the tyre’s life rather than fading with tread depth.
No more than a typical premium tyre. The Alpin range is designed with refinement in mind and posts competitive noise figures for a winter tyre, so most drivers won’t notice a meaningful increase in road noise compared with a standard premium tyre.
The Alpin 7 is the newer generation (launched 2024), replacing the Alpin 6 with around 6% better snow braking and 9% lower rolling resistance for improved efficiency. For performance and sports cars there’s the Pilot Alpin 5, plus a Pilot Alpin 5 SUV for larger vehicles and the Agilis Alpin for vans.
If you regularly drive in cold, wet or snowy winter conditions, yes. The shorter braking distances and extra grip below 7°C are a genuine safety benefit a summer tyre can’t match, and because they’re only used seasonally, a set spreads its cost over several winters.
Yes. The Alpin 7 is designed for petrol, hybrid and electric vehicles, with lower rolling resistance to help protect range and a construction that copes with the extra weight of an EV. Always fit the size and load rating specified for your vehicle.
It depends on your vehicle: the Alpin 7 suits most cars, the Pilot Alpin 5 is aimed at performance and sports models, the Pilot Alpin 5 SUV fits larger 4x4s and crossovers, and the Agilis Alpin is built for vans. Enter your registration or tyre size to find the right fit.
