The latest Grand California campervan evolution has officially been previewed: boasting a sophisticated new interior and practical enhancements for even more comfortable travels.
Did Volkswagen’s Grand California just get even comfier? We were already impressed by the leisurely feel of VW's forgotten campervan when we caught up in person earlier this year, so hearing further enhancements are inbound was sure to pique our interest.
The 2026 model revealed at Düsseldorf’s Caravan Salon promises a more luxurious and user-friendly living experience than ever before — so what’s been changed?
Stepping inside, the interior of the Grand California has received a visible aesthetic upgrade. The new ‘Atami Bamboo’ decor — most prominent on the tabletop and kitchenette surfaces — lends a warm and natural feel. But beneath this zen vibe, the fresh trim is hardy and van life-ready too, with the sophisticated wooden finish extending to the durable flooring in the kitchen, dining, and storage areas.

Complementing this new look is a redesigned black faucet in the kitchen which adds a tasteful modern touch. Volkswagen suggest this combination creates a lounge-like contrast to the predominantly white interior, evoking a Mediterranean yacht. We’ll admit this boat-like comparison wasn’t what immediately jumped to mind for us, but we’ll take their word for it.
Following the new additions’ underlying functional threads, several practical updates have been made to improve the Grand’s functionality.
A key new feature is the ability to securely lock the mobile dining table to the exterior of the kitchen unit, making al fresco dining a quick and convenient arrangement, should the weather allow it. For improved organisation, luggage nets are fitted in the upper cabinets of the California 600 (6.0-metre-long camper) and California 680 (6.8-metre) models — helping campers stow clothes and travel essentials with ease.
And would you fancy a little extra protection against heat, cold, and unwanted prying eyes when camping? Well, you can also now tick a box to add an optional thermal mat and blackout set for the California’s cab windows.
Underpinned by the latest award-winning Crafter chassis, the Grand California is now equipped with a range of advanced technological features. Taking centre stage in the ‘digital cockpit’ is a free-standing touchscreen, available in 10.4-inch or 12.9-inch format. From there, a suite of driver assistance systems, such as ‘Front Assist’ (emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection) and ‘Lane Assist’ (lane departure warning) come as standard, as well as front and rear parking aids — letting you squeeze into your ideal camping spots with ease.
For those looking to avoid an unwanted arm workout, an electronic parking brake has replaced the traditional lever. This has the handy side effect of freeing up space, allowing the driver's seat to be rotated more easily so you can enjoy that stylish new living area on a whim.
That’s all the new details for now, but we’ll keep an eye out for further details as the updated 2026 Grand California prepares to roll out to a campsite near you. In the meantime, what do you think of these subtle yet significant upgrades to VW’s big camper?
