Jaw-dropping Urban Widetrack Defender chooses Yokohama rubber as standard
At over 5 metres long and 2 metres wide, the standard Defender 110 isn’t lacking road presence. But what if you want to take things to the next level? A bespoke Urban upgrade could be the answer.
Truth be told, you’re spoilt for choice if you want to make your new Defender stand out from the crowd. From Overfinch to Kahn Design — even Mansory now have their own version — the modifying market is brimming with companies that’ll give your Landie a punchier look.
At Urban though, they do overhauls a little differently. As major proponents of the ‘OEM Plus look’ the Milton-Keynes-based firm ensures all upgrades retain that original manufacturer feel and quality, whilst also injecting more drama and individuality. Think of it like a tasteful remix of your favourite song: rather than changing the tone or the tempo, Urban simply turns up the volume to accentuate the best parts.
To that end, each Urban Widetrack Defender is entirely bespoke and designed to the customers’ exacting tastes and preferences. On the outside, that means you can spec upgrades including a High-Power LED Roof Light Pod, a vented carbon-fibre bonnet, a Black Styling Pack for the OEM bumpers and grille, front canards, and even mud flaps.

And things only get more interesting on the inside. Whether it’s full retrims in any shade or texture of leather you can fathom, Recaro seats, or flat-bottomed steering wheels — if you can name it, they’ll make it.
But what about the internals? Well that all depends on the base car, though Urban aren’t in the business of messing with the mechanicals — which is probably a good thing given they’d have a tough time improving upon the billions Land Rover spends in R&D to make this one of the most capable off-roaders on the market. That said, the Urban Defender does have one performance advantage over the regular car: Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 tyres.
With its special Enduro compound to enhance durability, the G015 should have no trouble handling the Defender’s two and a half tonne kerb weight — even on the roughest off-road tracks. Then, to make the most of the Land Rover’s Intelligent Terrain Response 2 system, the G015’s mix of circumferential and edgetec grooves bite into mud and snow to maximise traction.

But what if you want a bespoke off-roader that’s not got a Land Rover badge on the bonnet? Well, what about a custom Urban G-Wagon, an RSQ8, or, if you’ve recently won the lottery, a one-of-one Rolls Royce Cullinan? Whichever you pick though, there’s one thing each build has in common: Yokohama tyres. According to Urban, ‘they’re the perfect fit for our wheel designs not only in looks, but performance too. Yokohama meet the demands of the luxury performance vehicles we redefine, optimised for spot-on handling, and a smooth silent ride like no other.’
