Subaru, a brand that usually carves its own path, is launching a brand-new all-electric SUV. But with the electric SUV market booming, is this newcomer truly 'uncharted' territory, or is it perfectly on trend?
Subaru Europe has announced its upcoming electric offensive, and at the forefront is the all-new Subaru Uncharted. Promising ruggedness and agility, this compact SUV is Subaru's first foray into the all-electric SUV segment for the European market. While the name might suggest stepping off the beaten track and venturing into the unknown, the reality of the electric vehicle landscape in 2026 means this Uncharted is actually stepping onto a very familiar and increasingly crowded street. So, can it compete?
Well, firstly, the Uncharted aims to deliver that signature Subaru DNA. It’s designed for those who love the great outdoors but are also keen to embrace electric power. Subaru is promising a purposeful exterior design, and a cabin packed with modern tech. We're talking about that rather distinctive squared — and weirdly wrinkly — steering wheel, dual wireless chargers to keep your devices topped up on the go, paddle shifters for a more engaging drive, and a large 14-inch infotainment display.

Underpinning this new electric explorer — and defining its adventurous spirit — is Subaru's commitment to its renowned All-Wheel Drive (AWD) expertise, re-engineered for the electric age. This means a software-managed AWD system that intelligently distributes torque, aiming for superior cornering and steadfast traction in all conditions, will be available. It’s a system designed to provide that secure, go-anywhere feel Subaru owners have come to expect — which currently looks like to be bolstered with Bridgestone rubber.
The Uncharted is set to offer a range of choices to suit different needs and budgets. The headline act will be an AWD version utilising dual electric motors. This setup will provide a healthy 252 kW, allowing for a brisk 0-62 mph dash in just 5.0 seconds. Coupled with a 77 kWh battery, it’s expected to offer a range of up to 292 miles. It also boasts an impressive 1500 kg towing capacity, making it a practical option for those with goods to haul.
However, recognising that not everyone needs or wants AWD, and that range and affordability are crucial factors, Subaru will also be offering Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) versions. A ‘Long-Range’ FWD variant, sharing the same 77 kWh battery but powered by a single motor, aims to extend that reach even further, with a projected range of up to 363 miles.

For those looking for a more budget-friendly entry point, although we’re still waiting for a full price breakdown, there will be another single-motor FWD version featuring a smaller 57.7 kWh battery, delivering an estimated range of 276 miles. Crucially, all versions will come with a 22 kW on-board charger as standard, capable of replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. This is thanks to its pre-conditioning capabilities, ensuring decent charging speeds even when the weather isn't playing ball.
The Subaru Uncharted is slated to arrive in the UK in early 2026, with full specifications and pricing to be revealed closer to the launch. While the name might hint at venturing into the wild unknown, the Subaru Uncharted is very much a considered step into the very well-trodden, and increasingly popular, path of the electric SUV.
So, has Subaru down enough to steer you down the Uncharted path?
